Monday thoughts about channelling child-like enthusiasm.
Oftentimes friends and strangers alike laud me for my unwavering enthusiasm. My persistent faith that there's a silver lining to every cloud and my hippie-esque outlook towards most if not all situations. Hopelessly lost on an accidental hike in Sai Kung with no water and only mints for sustenance? We can't be the only ones who've been lost on a long hike. I'm almost certain we won't die of dehydration... It's odd, isn't it though? That unadulterated enthusiasm and positivity is all too often seen as a rarity. Dat British standoffishness, eh?

I champion child-like enthusiasm with every fibre of my being. Being completely unfiltered in my love for the mundane beauty in everyday, for anything Hello Kitty or Little Twin Stars, for my favourite drink coming in carton form, for the swings being free at the local park. That pure, non-jaded vision towards every moment. I truly live for it. I think I went through a phase where it was cool to be cool, whether you were or not. Fake it 'til you make it is the mantra so often thrown about in the industry I chose; fashion. Just pretend you're too cool to take your sunglasses off indoors. You're too cool (cold?!) to coat properly. Novelty and cute things 'should be' left behind when you turn 18. You're only 'allowed' to like Taylor Swift ironically or if it's the 1989 album.

Honestly? Life is too short for that.

I was that guy who unwaveringly stood up for Taylor Swift from 2008 and onwards. I couldn't even tell you how much I adore that woman. I'd give a limb for her but I know she wouldn't be down for that. The lounge in my apartment is decorated with talking Pikachu toys, Hello Kitty plushies and handmade lucky paper stars, not marble work surfaces, copper lamps and cacti. (Secret: I'm working on getting cacti. I'm just too lazy for the flower market.) Yes, sometimes I do laugh too loudly at things that seem only half-funny to you. So what if it's Monday? Smile and the world smiles with you.

Today, be the reason for someone else's smile.

  1. This is a great post! Fake it 'till you make it is a great mantra when it comes to confidence or work, but you're right. We need to be happier with ourselves as we are, be it personality, style and likes and dislikes.

I spent a lot of my teen years trying to impress people by being who I thought they wanted me to be. It took me a long time to realise that it's all pointless! Who wants to be friends with people that aren't interested in you unless you fit the mould? Not me. Life is so much easier if you stop living for others and do what makes you happy! Never lose you're childlike enthusiasm, it's a great quality and it's part of who you are.

  2. Oh Michelle I absolutely love this post :) :) You've really put a smile on my face and I'm totally with you, life is just too short to be taken so seriously. Absolutely love the ending quote.
    Love Holly x

  3. This was such a lovely post Michelle and I'm not ashamed to say I have hello kitty balloons all over my bedroom and my luggage has hot pink with a giant hello kitty bow all over it.

  4. Thanks Abi! I definitely went through the same thing, until I met my best friends in around Year 9. We were that group that Janice and Damian from Mean Girls classed as The Coolest People You'd Ever Meet ;) ever since I met that bunch, I realised it's always much better to do what you want and are.

  5. Thank you so much Jackie! I have a gingham Hello Kitty suitcase as well - jealous of your bows one!

  6. I only found your blog and I'm already in love 😍 I'm exactly like this, getting so enthusiastic about little things as well as big things, and refusing to give up and the lost thing. You're definitely not the only one to have gotten lost on a hike -aha it makes it sound like I'm some exercise guru hiker *crawls back under duvet* - I get lost so often its unreal 😊
Seriously though, I'm so excited AND YOU LIKE TAYLOR SWIFT TOO 😍 I feel like we would be great friends 😂

  7. Ah what a lovely comment Anne!! Thank you!
