Daisybutter - Hong Kong Lifestyle and Fashion Blog: red lip recommendations for asian complexion

A cliché title for a post about my 5 favourite bold lips for SS15. I bloody love Taylor Swift.
It’s hard to think that once upon a time, a red lip wasn’t a thing in my beauty bounty. Moreover, anything close to being a bold lip was certainly out of the question. And then along came YOU guys and Taylor Swift. For me it was a confidence issue as well as the fact that I continue to be terrible at makeup application! However, after I picked up first ever bold lip in the form of Rimmel Apocalips in Stellar, it was a one-way ticket to ‘my face is now naked without red/pink’.

Without further ado, here are my favourite springtime-appropriate bright lip companions:

Rimmel Apocalips in Stellar (unpictured because I can't find it, SOS!) - Let’s start with the one that kickstarted the craze. I picked this up on a whim whilst waiting for Kristabel before dinner and, quite frankly, I was terrified of it. It sat in my handbag until ever-enabling Kbel willed me to put it on and the rest is history. I’m sure you’ve heard the praises of Rimmel Apocalips already but I simply love the colour range, lasting power and glossy finish. I rarely go for a glossy finish (too messy) but this is perfect, even when blotted down a touch.

CHANEL Rouge Allure in Gabrielle – Hi I’m Michelle and bloggers are a bad influence. Aisling practically pinned me down and made me hand my card over with this purchase. A more orange-toned red, this is my ‘I’m a serious woman’ red that I crack out in the evening. However I find this difficult to wear unless I’ve gone for something cool and pale on my eyes and I usually opt for a champagne or gold hue…

YSL Kiss & Blush in 5 – This lip/cheek hybrid stain is always in my handbag. One of those cult community products, I genuinely ‘get’ the hype. It applies effortlessly with the inverted doe foot applicator and No.5 is the ideal pinkish bright red for day and night wear. It’s certainly more of a stain and I’m yet to try it on my cheeks but on the lips? Perfect.

Etude House Dear My Wish in PK021 – Not red but a favourite bold lip regardless, this is my current favourite date night lipstick. It’s a beautiful cerise hot pink with a glossy finish that I’m obsessed with. Etude House are seriously SO good for lip products. This one tends to slip a tiny bit but I can oversee that as it’s the kind of bright pink that works ridiculously well as a gradient lip.

Rimmel Kate Moss Matte in 111 – And last but not least, the game-changer in my beauty arsenal. Nine times out of ten, if you’ve asked me which red lip I’m wearing on Instagram, it’s this one. A true post-box red that flatters everyone with a classic matte finish, I find this to be stupidly photogenic and it lifts the complexion too. Having a bad day? This will mask everything. Having a good day? This will make you feel like [insert favourite celebrity of choice].

Let me know your red lip recommendations below.

  1. I really love the sound of the YSL kiss and blush, it sounds like such a lovely shade! My current favourite reds are MAC Ririwoo and Blake's Red by L'Oreal x

  2. rimmel kate moss has been such a craze lately. maybe i really should give it a try. i only own one and it was gifted long long ago, YSL The Mats in 205. personally i love it. i gotta step up the game tho. thanks for sharing! will take a look at some soon

  3. I remember when you guys all had apocolips - I have it too but I never reach for it now. My favourite go-to reds is probably Tom Ford's Flame (really wearable) but for full on red, my fave is MACs Russian Red. Ahhh love a good lippy!

  4. I'm still not really into reds but I do like to try a few. The Étude house one is lovely and I love their formula and packaging. And I totally sang the title Michelle.

  5. You really can't go wrong with reds. You totally rock them Mish!

  6. I love the Apocalips blotted down - it lasts so long and is so much less scary than it looks! Classic red favourite is Clinque's Red-y To Wear although mine has definitely see better days! x

  7. I've definitely gotten more into red lipsticks the past year - Taylor Swift might or might not have had a huge influence on it. I'm in love with NARS Dragon Girl - which is one of the shades that Taylor uses. I'm also really loving orange-toned reds so I'm definitely putting Chanel Gabrielle on my wishlist :) xxx

  8. I've only just learned to embrace the red lip, despite wearing all shades of pink, coral, berry and orange on an everyday basis. When I say red, I still mean the orangey ones, like Gabrielle, or the Berry ones last Charlotte Tilbury's Love Liberty, but you know, I'm getting there!

You, on the other hand, rock a red lip like nobody else!

  9. I seriously love mine, worth every penny!!

  10. Ah I'll have to take a look at the YSL one (:

  11. I have no idea where mine's gone! Slightly worried because it was one of my favourites. I'm yet to try Russian Red, maybe I should hunt that down...

  12. I adore Etude House's lip products!

  13. When I started blotting it down it opened up a whole new world of possibilities to me hahah!

  14. All hail Queen Swift! Ah I've had a look at that but it doesn't quite suit my complexion!

  15. Oooh yeah, you're definitely more of a coral girl. I just want Taylor to love me ):

  16. Come back to London for her Hyde Park gig then!!!
