Happy Lunar New Year!

Today is the first page of the Year of the Horse, or 年初一, as we would call it. Yesterday we celebrated in the traditional way by freshening up the house and redecorating to signify the new year and new fortunes. My Granny laid out some food and mandarin for my late Grandad as always, and we all went round to her house for the Reunion Dinner. This Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner is kinda a huge deal: every dish signifies something different, from wealth to health, fortune and prosperity. My little baby cousin took great delight in trying everything and attempting to eat as much as possible! I rounded things off with a pomelo leaf bath and by washing my hair before midnight, too.

Traditionally, Chinese New Year celebrations last for 16 days, with different ‘rituals’ and traditions completed each day. Tonight we’ll probably be popping over to Granny’s again as the first day is to honour the eldest in the family. There’s plenty of other tidbits that we indulge in too -- sweet treats, wearing red, not buying shoes for the entirety of the celebration; it’s all so much fun!

So, Year of the Horse, I hear you’ve got good things in store for me as a little Ram. Bring. It. On. (Let’s gloss over the fact that I accidentally bought Taylor Swift Red Tour tickets for Sunday, subsequently discarding all notion of the 年初三 tradition of not leaving the home…) x

Your 2014 Year of the Horse (as told to by my Granny and re-interpreted into sense by me!):
Rat: The Rat has many complementary traits to the Horse, making for a very successful year for you. Reaching the level of success you hope for and are capable of will take some hard work and extra effort. You'll have plenty to celebrate in many areas of your life, including your career, love life, relationships and finances. If you learn from being open-hearted, there is plenty to be promised from your year.

Ox: The 2014 Year of the Horse has a lot to offer for the Ox as no obstacle is too much for you. Remain optimistic and determined, and you'll be able to overcome any pressure and hardships, to reveal a very successful year. It'll be a good year to start tie up loose ends and maintaining a good work ethic, work wise. Ponder the possibilities but don't rush into anything steadfast.

Tiger: Change and evolution are key themes for the Tiger this year. You'll have a busy year across all areas, from career to money, romance to family. Address any problems or opportunities as they arise and use your great intuition to make exceptionally good decisions.

Rabbit: The intuitive Rabbit will have an intense year of navigating opportunities to their wishes, helping to guide them personally and professionally this year. It's looking to be an excellent year for your career, and the key to remaining successful is to be aware of your opportunities. Don't sit back and wait for the opportune moment, grab it, search for it. For the single Rabbit, you could meet the man or woman of your dreams this year through a particularly unusual set of circumstances.

Dragon: 2014 gives a wholly dramatic year to those under the fierce Dragon sign.  There'll be plenty to celebrate, and the Dragon will have a dramatic impact on every situation and person they meet. There's plenty of happiness to celebrate both with work success and in their personal life too. Careers are a major driving force of your year.

Snake: A year of revolution and evolution awaits the Snake. There seems to be some upcoming challenges and difficulties but if you throw in some diplomacy and humble behaviour, they can easily be overcome. In love, the Snake should try to keep jealousy in check as it'll be an emotional year for romance.

Horse: Regal and romantic, the Horse should have a great 2014. The year should be filled with personal fulfilment, accomplishments, successes and joy. Take advantage of every great opportunity that is presented to you. Work wise, you'll be busy and full of new and exciting ideas, with chances to travel too. In the relationships department, harmony is in store for the year: stronger bonds with family and friends, and longer commitments are all strongly on the cards.

Ram: The peace-loving Ram should enjoy a truly fabulous 2014 this year. Every aspect of life will be positive and rewarding, with plenty of good fortune. In the workplace, there are plenty of opportunities to advance and expand. Earnings will increase and it's a great time for investment. The unassuming Ram will be lucky and fulfilled in love this year, as romances blossom throughout the year reaching something strong by the end of the year. It's an accident prone year, and the Ram should be wary of people who are envious of them.

Monkey: 2014 should be a fine year for the Monkey. Whilst it won't be as fast-moving as hoped, the year should also look after their money and not let racing minds get the better of them. Monkeys are masters of their romantic destiny this year. Put time and energy into relationships for a significant development. To make the most of their year, Monkeys should live in the moment and appreciate every second.

Rooster: Roosters will experience many new beginnings this year. Be more open-minded and the year will be full of success in abundance. The Rooster will have many opportunities and activites this year, especially in love and work. There are chances to learn, evolve and progress. Romance wise, the Rooster sees emphasis on new people who have or will enter your world. Do not overlook anyone this year for there could be a hidden gem for you.

Dog: The Dog will feel more appreciated this year than ever. Social invitations begin to flutter in from the beginning of the year, and the focus will be on romance and relationships in 2014. Personal and professional lives will flourish: money arrives from unexpected sources and platonic and family relationships will reach a new height of closeness. Love lines will sparkle, and relationships could wind up becoming lifelong.

Pig: There's a lot for the Pig to do this year. Move quickly to enjoy every moment and cope with the change and movement in store for you in 2014. Steady flows of money are punctuated by unexpected expenses, so be wise with your wealth. You'll be challenged to remain good communication so take time to stay in touch with loved ones. The Pig will have many chances to travel in 2014, offering much to learn and explore.
