One of my favourite things to do on a Sunday, besides a) nothing, and b) eat food, is to sift through old photo albums and laugh at dodgy haircuts, forgotten memories and moments gone by. Half of my family reside on the other side of the world and I very rarely get to see them, so it's nice to get a little nostalgic and peek through at family holidays where we're all together too.

I was somewhat amused and fascinated by the evolving (or not so evolving) nature of fashion over time, noticing similarities between the way my Mum and I dressed. Ever since chatting away to Kristabel and then Erin about style similarities, I've been itching to get back to the photo albums and showcase the good, the bad and the ugly.

Aged three/four in a little pink collared number with T-bar shoes and ankle socks; Aged seven/eight in a floral dress and sandals in Trafalgar Square.

It's so odd to look back at my baby photos and realise that, actually, my own style hasn't really changed over time. I remember the little pink dress with its' sailor-esque collar SO well: my Mama used to pick it out for special occasions, namely yum cha at the weekend in London, where we'd meet up with family and family friends. I still enjoy a good collar today!

Fast forward just a couple of years and I'd just been acquainted with my brother and sister (who are two of my best, best friends nowadays). On a summer day trip into London to feed the pigeons at Trafalgar Square, here I am in a black based floral dress and sandals! Once a devoted monochrome girl, always a devoted monochrome girl...

My Mama in her late teens/early Twenties.

And now for some gems from the 70's and 80's! My Mama and I have seriously similar style: here she is in her early Twenties, sporting denim shirts, oversized knits, a little satchel, brogues and loafers, and that navy dress with a lace collar, heck - even our poses are the same! (Mama Daisy obviously paved the way for fashion blogs!) Be still my beating heart, I wish Mama had kept ahold of her old togs, for I would LOVE to twirl around in that number.

Do you share, or did you share, a similar style with your Mama? I'd love to hear some of your familial style anecdotes!

  1. I definitely don't share any style with my Mum apart from when she was young in the 70s, she went on the wrong side of the 80s with a huge perm and massive glasses!

I love what she dressed me in as a young girl though, I'd wear the dresses now if I could find my size in them! I love that sweet little sailor dress! xo

    1. Haha oh dear! I remember wanting curly hair when I was little, so maybe I do 'really' take after my Mama! Thank you Catherine, I wish I could still pull something like that off ;) x

  4. You are lucky to have such a stylish mumma! My mum's clothes in her early 20s should never been seen again (thankfully perms and huge round pink glasses faded out of fashion). These pictures are so cute, looking through old photos is the best xx

    1. Eeep, thanks Tsui, so nice of you! So sad that my Mama typically didn't save her old clothes and accessories. I've 'inherited' some amazing Gucci and Vuitton bags though! x

  6. Aww look at ickle Michelle! I haven't looked at old photos of my mum for a while now but I have taken over a lot of the clothes she kept when she was younger, so she probably had good style.

Sadly me and my mum don't share similar style at all - I'm all about the dresses but pretty much the only time my mum has ever worn one was for her wedding! x

    1. Aw thank you Gillian! That little pink dress was my favourite thing ever, I have SO many photos of me in it that it's a little odd! I'm still surprised that Mama and I shared such similar styles, can't decide if that's good or bad in my favour just yet, haha. x

  11. You're lucky to have been dressed so well as a child! When I look through old photos I'm like oh my word, what was my mum thinking! I definitely don't share similar style to her when she was younger, although I hope I'll look as beautiful as she did on my own wedding day! Nowadays I like to nudge her in certain clothing directions so I wouldn't mind sharing a shirt or two hehe.

  15. I love old photos! My mum used to have to lie on her bed and put a coathanger through the zip of her jeans to zip them up because they were so tight! x
