One glance into my bedroom or a onceover at my Twitter feed will instantly leave you with the realisation that I have a tendency to space out and obsess over games, particularly of the RPG variety. You name it and I have probably played it. Surprised? My current favourites include Pokemon Ruby (I dug out my old cartridge from our household's stash) and Maplestory (how amazing is the Luminous class?), but another game that has gripped my attention is New Style Boutique for the Nintendo 3DS XL.

Nintendo presents: New Style Boutique. Compatible with the Nintendo 3DS XL, RRP: £29.99.

Let me just start by mentioning that this is literally a game for all ages and all capabilities. It's a very simple concept: you're the new girl in town who happens upon an up and coming fashion boutique, that you soon become the manager of. The game revolves around the management of your boutique, from buying stock in for your shop (mine is aptly named LITTLEDAISY), to styling outfits for your dedicated customers.

As childish and utterly girly as New Style Boutique is, I can't deny the fact that I've spent much of the past fortnight cooped up under a blanket, avidly creating outfits to my customers' tastes. The 3D graphics are a nice touch, although I found it super hard to adjust to after being a 2D gal for so long, and it does give you a headache after prolonged play. This is easily counteracted with the 3D slider on the side of the device - handy!

In game-play, you can also redesign the actual boutique, visit areas of the city to shoot street style (and be photographed yourself!), visit the local coffee house to schmooze your customers, and even plan virtual fashion shows with Wi-Fi capabilities. You can enter contests (Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire style) to style outfits, and win prizes to further enhance your boutique's name. As well as that, with 'good' buying techniques and creating collections for every taste, you unlock more stockists, features and challenges. I like. The game is targeted at young girls, although I'm more than happy to admit that this is my new guilty pleasure! It'd make a perfect gift to little sisters, cousins, etc. who are just beginning to embrace fashion.

Difficulty: 3/10
Story/Concept: 8/10
Value for Money: 8/10
Graphics: 9/10

Target Audience: 3+
Recommended? If you have some time on your hands and secretly want to curate your own boutique - yes!

Disclaimer: I was loaned the Nintendo 3DS XL and this game for review purposes, this does affect the opinions written in this review, of course. I just like games and nerding out once in a while a lot.

  6. Um, hello, I have a level 85 on World of Warcraft (have yet to try out the new expansion... if only there were more hours in the day!)
This looks like a bit of simple fun - good "train game"!

  7. That sounds so great, I haven't played on a DS in years but I have to say I feel a twinge of jealousy when I see people playing on one of the fancy new models, maybe I'll save up for one...
