Fashion vs. Function: Glasses

daisybutter - UK Fashion and Style Blog: glasses, fashion, functional fashion, portrait

Gawd I've put off writing this post for weeks. Sorry Alyse! Glasses have been a prominent feature of my life since I was fifteen. I was once really self-conscious about having to wear them, and would have them stashed away in my bag until the very moment that my teacher began writing on the board. It's weird, isn't it, when certain items hold negative connotations? Geek, nerd, teacher's pet, 'four-eyes', hipster, etc. You get the gist.

Luckily, I've never really experienced all of that negativity, like I've said before I often just blend into the background, and was all too grateful when left to the conformities of secondary school. Alyse mentioned a few weeks ago that she really liked my confidence in wearing glasses on my fashion blog, a field where fashion will always outweigh function, and I began to jot down some thoughts on it all.

Yes, I am 'confident' - whatever that means nowadays - with wearing glasses. I'm a 'geek' anyway, so I don't help myself. I mean, it is so I can see more than about two feet in front of me, but throw in the Chanel frames that my parents gifted me for my 20th birthday (or it could've been 19th) and the fact that dozens of high-profile females wear their frames out and about, and it ain't that bad really. When it comes down to it, I think I see my own wearing-of-glasses for both fashion and function. I look really different and don't feel like me when I'm without my trusty Chanel frames, like in the Company magazine feature that a few of you caught me in!

What do you think of glasses as fashion? Do you wear yours on a daily basis, or do you keep them for in-house use only? I'd love to hear what you think of four-eyed fashion! (I'm gonna throw it out there that I'm allowed to say that!)

  1. I have the worst vision ever so am constantly in my contact lenses, which are an utter pain! Because I am writing so much just now, and spending so much time in front of my computer, my eyes just feel so dry and tired so I'm wearing my glasses a lot more at home. But I just don't have the confidence to wear them out further than the supermarket. Not because they're glasses, but just because I struggle to find affordable frames that suit me and fit my childishly small face!
I think you're so lucky to look so gorgeous in your glasses, you always look so flawless!
I also don't think it helps for me that the only feature I like about myself is my eyes, so I begrudge hiding them ha!

Hope you're well lovely, sorry about the essay! xxx

  2. It's good that you're comfortable with your four-eyedness, haha!

I got my first pair of glasses last year, after I just couldn't see the lecture screens anymore. I like the pair I've got, but I'm definitely still in denial about having to wear them, so I pull them out only when I REALLY need to. I don't feel like I have a glasses-face, and I suppose, because I got them so recently, it's a sore point in my pride that I need glasses at all. I do think that, if you're going to have glasses, you may as well get a pair you like and look good in!

I feel that glasses have definitely become more fashionable in recent years (or because I'm growing up?), but I'm not too sure how I feel about people wearing those fake glasses with blank/normal lenses, though.

  3. I wear glasses in real life all the time have done since I was 11. I am as blind as a bat and if I don't have them on for ten minutes I get a searing headache. I don't feature them on my blog because I can't photograph them. I always seem to get reflections and it looks funny. Saything that I feel more confident with contacts in. I guess this comes down to having the odd comment during secondary school. I do love buying glasses though and must have about 5 pairs, i'm jealous about the Chanel pair!

  4. I've been wearing glasses since I was 2 years of age, I guess I'm pretty used to them, but I'm seriously glad that my mother let me choose my frames- yes even at that age, and yes i had some seriously lairy ones... It was 1994. I think if you have to wear glasses, there's no reason for that to be a sacrifice of fashion these days. Every major design house from Miu Miu to Marc Jacobs as well as plenty of specialist opticians, andeven some celebrtities have branded frames and new technology for thinning lenses means that even the seriously blind like me don't have to endure hefty lenses.

I Have also been wearing contact lenses since I was 15. I started wearing them because although I don't hate glasses, I also was at an age where I wanted to do different things and have choices. I wear my lenses most of the time because I like the greater field of vision, but I don't infrequently wear my glasses, by choice, because frankly they're the only pieces of Prada, Fendi and Versace that I'm likely to be able to afford for a while!

  5. I think now the whole 'stigma' of glasses isn't as big a deal as it used to be possibly because so many people use them nowadays (all this staring at computer screens I imagine) but it's always great to hear someone speak out on these sorts of topics, I had to wear glasses at about 7-8 because my vision kept going out of focus and back then it really was like having a big sign saying 'be unpleasant to me please!'

Despite my less than stellar experience I think glasses can make an outfit look that bit more put together! I often whack on my dorky hello kitty hipster frames if I want a little more 'cute' in my outfit.

  6. I've had to wear glasses since I was 10 and about 4 years ago I switched to monthly contact lenses which I can wear for the whole month without having to change them. I don't really mind wearing glasses at all, it's more the inconvenience of having to have subscription sunglasses that motivates me to just stick with my contacts. I don't think there's a particularly bad stigma attached to wearing glasses, there are so many amazing frames out there especially by Italian brands, I want to invest in some really crazy glasses because you might as well go all out an embrace wearing glasses.

  7. Actually, I wear glasses a lot. I wear them at home and at work but when I go out I'll whack in some contact lenses. I just find it more convenient as I am always smudging my glasses (due to me constantly pushing them up my non existent bridge) but maybe I should feature them on my blog more!

  8. I can't see a foot from the end of my nose either. Mostly, I wear contact lenses. I prefer the way they look and find it more comfortable. I do wear glasses a lot though, out and about, to work, and in some blog posts. It just depends on my mood that day.

  9. I have worn glasses since I was about 4! I had that whole thing of not putting them on until the teacher starting writing on the board too- and whipped them off if a cute boy turned round in class, hah! Now I wear contacts, I prefer having good peripheral vision.. but I wear glasses at home, and try and give my eyes a rest at the weekends a bit.. Yours suit you beautifully though! x

  10. I don't wear glasses, but it has never occured to me that you should/shouldn't on a Fashion Blog! Your glasses are adorable, and you need them to see, why the heck would you take them off??
    Glasses are awesome =)

  11. Thanks for writing this post! I've worn glasses since I was in the second grade and my vision's just really worsened over the years. I actually experienced a lot of the negative connotations growing up -- it's still sort of a sore subject just because of all the implications that come with a prescription. That being said, I alternate between contacts and glasses. I'm more confident in contacts, but I'm starting to embrace glasses (all this work in front of computers and such!). Yay for Chanel frames!

I think it's nice that glasses are starting to come into fashion, that celebrities who need them are starting to wear them out more. I have to admit, though, that it does irk me when people wear fake frames out because it IS the trend. I would never tell someone what they should or shouldn't wear, but I see my glasses as a medical prescription. No one goes around in other medical devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, back braces, etc., so why are glasses the exception? Just my two cents. Overall, it's a good change to see the expanding 'nerd' culture and seeing more people in the public eye with glasses!

  12. shamefully wish i could wear glasses but i just dont want to be that guy wearing fake frames.

  13. I cannot see a thing without glasses or contact lenses so I alternate between the two. If I go out I will always wear my contacts unless my eyes are feeling dry or sore or something as I'm not a fan of my glasses - they're just some cheapo frames from the kid's section! I do want to buy some actual nice grown up glasses at some point soon though, but they're so expensive! Probably worth it though. I think I'd still prefer wearing contacts though, glasses can be a pain when it's raining and you can't see wherever you look and I hate when they steam up! I also feel more used to my face without glasses on! x

  14. I can relate to this post so much. I wear my glasses none stop because i can't not. I sometimes feel very cautious as names associated with them are just ridiculous. I tend to let it wash over my head. I love how you are confident wearing them as i would love to be even more. Its great that you base them on a fashion blog, it doesn't make you any less capable of looking great, which certainly is what you do. I wear them on my blog, but sometimes i just worried some people don't relate as well because i wear them, and others don't so they see me as different.

  15. I've literally never thought about my glasses much before. I know that thick feramed glasses became a whole hipster thing, which I find a bit weird. I'm definitely against the wholse fashion glasses thing. I get glasses can look cool, but considering I spent about 5 years hating my glasses, I cannot view them as fashionable. I no longer hate my glasses, mostly because when I was 16 I found some frames that suits my face and looked decent, I also got contact lenses. I don't wear my contact lenses all the time, I no longer mind people seeing me in my glasses, to me they are great for the lazy days when I just can't be bothered to put any effort in. Also, they are the thing that allows me to see, major plus.

Great post, it's nice to try and think about things outside of the usual fashion box.

  16. I wear my glasses with pride ;) I don't mind wearing them, people often say I look a lot more intelligent wearing them! I think you look gorgeous with glasses ;)

  17. I think you really suit your glasses :) I mostly wear contact lenses however, this has got me thinking that I should wear my glasses a little more often xx

  18. It doesn't bother me wearing glasses from an aesthetic point of view, it bothers me as a matter of practicality. I really don't think they are practical! While wearing contacts makes my eyes water or become red and tired, I favour that to the task of wearing glasses! I find glasses a nuisance to wear in all honesty - in the rain, in the sun, in the wind they're he'll. Rain speaks for its self, I'd often tire of wiping off the splodges! The sun becomes a blinding light reflected a hundred times and glasses are a no go! And wind sees my hair getting trapped in the frames and even more tangled than it already is! And don't even get me started on the smudges! Those things were the Bain of my life! I've worn them for years, but since switching to contacts I can appreciate the advantages of a face sans glasses. I do still wear them occasionally, it just feels weird now I'm not used to them. I'm a geek, but I never imagine myself in glasses, even when I wore them all the time! I was quite excited to get them though! I do wear them with pride when I wear them, even if it is a bit unnatural now! I don't see the point in wearing glasses when you don't need them, or those glasses without lenses - what's the point! Glasses are for seeing better, not for looking 'totes cool'!

  19. I am blind as a bat, and used to be the same as you in the way that I'd leave my glasses off for as long as possible until I REALLY had to see something! About 7 months ago I got contact lenses because I was going to visit family in Sinagpore for 3 weeks and actually wanted to be able to see without having to wear my glasses! People always tell me they look nice, and I think glasses look great when I see them on other people - but for me, I was always sitting on them, breaking them, loosing them and quite often they would literally fall off my face haha! x

  20. when i was younger i used to HATE wearing glasses. i remember i had to wear an eye patch once in nursery and i was traumatised by it! these days i don't really need to wear them every day but i wear them at work sometimes and i always get weird comments. i have 'geek'/'hipster' frames which i genuinely only bought because they were the cheapest but i constantly get asked if they're fake! so ridic haha x

  22. Luckily, I've never experienced those names either.
You look great in your glasses!
I always wear mine because I, too, have to wear them in order to see more than 2 feet.
I've been wearing glasses since I was 8, I'm 17 now, so almost 10 years! On and off though.
I guess it used to be fashion over function for me because I was so fussy with the frames but I'm not bothered by them now. I have thick black ones at the moment.
I think the attitude towards glasses has changed now because tons of people are pictured with their glasses on. Even shops stock clear lensed / fake ones!

  23. I only got my glasses about 2 months ago, id always wanted them AHA! and I got braces in september, so I'm the classic 'geek look' and i'm 17, but I think that in this 'day and age' everyone probably has them and braces at some point so I think it's a positive thing. And I don't have designer glasses, I have the good ol' specsavers classic ones and I love them! <3

  24. I feel lucky that I can apply style to, what essentially is a disadvantage! I only started wearing glasses when I was 16 and to be honest I've never minded wearing them at all...they're just part of my face now! I do find it funny when people wear glasses as a fashion accessory sometimes because if you think about it...we don't walk around with hearing aids in...you know...it's strange! But yes, glasses = AWESOME, and the fact that we can wear contacts if we don't fancy them, even better :)

  25. I'm blind as a bat without my glasses, but I mainly wear contacts seeing as I haven't found a pair that suit me quite yet. I really like yours though, the Chanel frames are always lovely X

  26. You have pulled me into commenting even though I have a no blogs rule during the week whilst I'm on placement. But well with this topic I had to comment seeing as I've been wearing glasses all the time since I was 2 years old. I've been through the whole name calling stage at school, but because I'd been wearing them for years before I went to school, it was literally like water off a ducks back. It used to be all about function, wear glasses you can read, don't wear glasses you can't read and have a lazy eye. But now with all the designers glasses out there they're a mix of the both. I now have a collection of around 7 pairs of glasses, I wear them all day every day and you wouldn't wear a top all day every day so therefore I need a few pairs of glasses. Well that's my excuse anyway. Fashion or function... well I basically can't function without them but.... I like to make them fashionable too :P x

  27. I think that you look amazing with glasses and i actually see them as another fashion piece. I only have a pair that is so i don't get blind in front of the computer or tv. I never REALLY need them but now that i'm into editorial design i'll start using them more because after 3 hours my eyes hurt like hell.

  28. I really need to get some new specs! I'm blind as a bat without them but got contact lenses when I was in my final year at school for sport etc (I look trampolining in P.E, lol!) and they just became a part of my routine from there really. If I'm just in the house, watching TV etc then I'll be in my glasses but generally prefer lenses for being out and about, primary as my specs are so loose on my head and I don't have a spare pair- I'd be lost (literally!) without them!

  29. When I was told by the optician that I had to wear glasses I full-on cried. I don't know why I was so against them, perhaps it was just being in year eight and very aware of not being "cool", that I didn't want these added on top. It wasn't until I started university that I finally bought contacts, so that's about six years since I started needing the extra help with seeing. I don't really mind mine now (although I do have to get new lenses!), but I still feel more comfortable in contact lenses. On a practical level, I don't want to take my glasses on a night out for fear of breaking them, or in the rain, but I just don't think I look "right" in them. Perhaps I'll wear mine in a blog post one day! I do love yours, it was so odd to see you without them in Company. I guess I've just always known you to wear frames, so it's what I expect. xx

  31. I've been wearing glasses since I was 13, and I was so embarrassed about people noticing my glasses, looking at my glasses or saying something about them. Nowadays I'm so thankful for them. I'm only short sighted so I can cope with everyday things. Wearing them for too long, or not to see something from afar ends up hurting my eyes and gives me a migraine so I don't wear them for too long. I think glasses are a blessing on earth, and couldn't care less if people call me names or bully me about them.

  32. Your Chanel glasses are fab. I wear glasses when I'm working at a computer as my eyesight has got so much worse since I started uni. I do feel a bit self conscious wearing them but having nice frames definitely helps! x

  33. I have my lovely black framed 'buddy holly' ones, as I like to call it. I cherish these glasses but I never wear them out in public. Okay maybe not never, but rarely do I go out in them. I never really thought of glasses as a fashion statement until I moved back to Japan. Ever since I got back, I've been on the hunt for so many different kinds of glasses in hopes to find one that I can wear with different outfits. Still on the hunt... People here wear them with almost every single one of their outfits! It's seriously crazy. Till I can find some I can wear without being self conscious (since I never wore them as a fashion statement), I will stick with my prescription ones & just wear them inside the comforts of my house, haha.

    Great post!!!

  34. I have been wearing glasses since I was 11 and my thoughts are if I cant see without them embrace them!! I love my huge frames, inspired by the recent trend, but also I get annoyed by seeing the outlines of my small frames. I have two pairs now but my black Hackett frames are my fave. I wear them everyday - all day and I can't imagine not having them! Also the thought of putting contacts in freaks me out a little! Also on the more practical side I literally cant see farther than 30cm without my spectacles! x

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree, you look very confident when you're wearing your glasses - I love your frames!

Since I was 13 my eyes have just deteriorated due to having a lazy left eye, which was fixed in an operation when I was 2, so they've just been getting worse and worse, and I'm now reliant on my glasses to stop me falling over! It doesn't help that I'm clumsy as ;)

Unfortunately I have the bad luck of having really small eyes paired with the world's ugliest glasses! Hahaha, it's not that bad I guess, but my glasses are spindly and black which doesn't help to 'open' my eyes or make them look bigger. As well as, having the smallest nose which limits my choice in glasses. So when I get self-concious I wear contact lenses but now, I've given up trying to not look geeky (big fail, of course!) as it is quite expensive, and wear my glasses at school.

I don't know whether you have this problem but I have a (very) small Asian nose, do you have trouble finding glasses that fit your nose?
