I posted a Spring Summer wishlist last week, full of whimsy pastels and spring pickings following on from another wishlist that I'd posted before that, and the comments all pointed to one main issue: 'Aren't pastels wildly unwearable?' I'm a strong purveyor of the idea that you can wear whatever you want, as long as you feel comfortable and confident in it. I think the idea that girls with pale complexions can't wear pastels is a mere myth, and quite frankly, I think a pale complexion was made for this trend!

Rather than focusing this week's installment on one particular item as I so often do, I thought I'd have a go at styling different ways of incorporating the pastel trend into an outfit, much like in my Aquatic trend edition. You don't have to go overboard and delve into the Meadham Kirchoff or Louis Vuitton extremes of the trend, gorgeously cute and sweetly whimsical as they are. Heck even my 'your clothes look funny, Mish' sister approves of these Looks!

Look One is the most 'currently realistic' interpretation of the pastel trend, on the basis that jeans are all you want to wear when it's THAT cold outside. The pastel jeans can easily be swapped for those pale blue jeans from Primark that everyone seems to own, or even a light grey version, available everywhere. I saw this jumper as worn by Emma and Suzi, and it remains on high on my wishlist: a perfect light coverup that'll see you through to the beginnings (or end) of the British summertime.

I think the second Look is inspired by lazy summer days that are spent sitting outside in the garden with a book, or the pub with a pitcher, whichever floats your boat! The subtle crochet stripes on the top are quite sporty-inspired, another trend which sees itself peeking out this season, paired with a bloggers' staple of an AA skirt, a bag that hits at hip length and woven detail shoes.

Finally, Look Three is a preppy-mixed-with-tougher-accents kinda outfit. The printed bralet would be perfect under a much more conservative shirt, and paired with lace-up boots and high-waisted shorts, it's the perfect twist on a classic preppy Look. I also threw a peachy knitted top, just to tie the colours together!

  6. I've never been a lover of pastels until quite recently, so this post is really helpful to me. It's great to finally see ways of wearing pastels with out looking overly girlie but still feminine, thanks for the inspiration x

  7. Thanks Stacey! I'm a huge fan of either cutting the ends off and hemming them myself, or rolling them for a demi-cropped look in the SS (:

  8. Thank you Cherry! I keep seeing gorgeous pink and purple pairs everywhere and really wanting to snap some up, I have a habit of pairing items with other things before I've even bought them :P Something I picked up from my Mum ;) xx

  9. Thanks lovely! I've started shopping the pastel trend already, might wear something from it in tomorrow's outfit post (: no time like the present!

  10. Thank you Jodie, glad you found the post inspiring! I think it's all too easy to look at a trend, decide it's impossible to wear, and end up not bothering at all haha (: just wanted to show how a trend can easily be interpreted into an 'everyday outfit' that you'd probably wear anyway! xx

Love all of these outfits! Being pale and having a slightly ginger-y tint to my hair I struggle to wear pastels, but a friend gave me a pair of lilac jeans recently so I'm going to dare to wear!xxxx

  12. I loved the first outfit because i actually have pastel pink jeans and a gold sweater very similar to that one lol.
I'm glad you say that pale girls can wear pastels too because i'm very pale (people in my country normally have a more tanned skin tone) and i love it! The tones are super cute and they're very easy to wear when you try the simple way: pastel top + jeans.

I've been worrying about the pastel 'craze' for a while now...I just don't think pastels suit me very much. This post has given me loads of inspiration though! xo

  20. Aw thanks Yona! The idea is that most people will typically have similar things in their wardrobe to mix with some more current pieces ;) I think pastels work with bronzed skin or pale skin to be honest! xx

  23. I think it's quite a well-rounded trend, just depends on how you interpret the trend really, it can just be as subtle as a pastel nail colour and accessories (:

  25. I love look one, however I just don't know if it's what I'd wear. But maybe that's a good thing. I want these trousers, I really do, they're super fit. I think you should get them Michelle.. you'd look FITTTTT.x

  26. I absolutely love outfit 3. The pastel trend has to be one of my favourites, I love clashing the colours together. I've seen many pieces in the shops I can't wait to get my mitts on!

  27. DO IT. Or wear Look Two ;) I would if I hadn't just spent two days in London, then paid rent, bills and food shopped to my heart's content hahaha, student life sucks! xxxx

  28. Thanks sweet (: I'm a huge fan of pastels with a singular pop of something seriously neon and/or bright too!

  29. Oh michelle you always mange to make me want to spend all my money :( and you've done it big time this time hahah! I WANT EVERYTHING. especially the shirt and shorts on look 3! also makes me wish i never sold my AA pocket skirts. If only I had them now!

  30. I'm quite pale and I agree it's a bit of a myth that pale people can't wear pastels, as long as I'm not head to toe in a single pale shade (which would leave me looking a bit washed out!) I think it'll be fine!
I love the looks you've created, especially 'pastel prep', mixing pastels with bolder pieces is a winner in my eyes! x

  31. I can not tell you how much I want the lemon jeans in the first outfit!! They're gorgeousss! I do love a nice pastel colour in an outfit. Love this post, I do find pastel hard to pair with items I always opt for black to make the whole outfit less pale looking and in a bid to make sure I don't look completely washed out :p Hope you're good lovely

  35. Real life doesn't get any better dear! Especially when you live in frigging St Albans! ALL my pay goes on rent, bills and that! BOOOO.x

  36. But at least for the most part, St Albans is pretty and scenic ;) Stevenage is chavtastic, except for me obvs! xx

  37. Gorgeous outfits! I'm a very pale girl so I had horrible Willy Wonka themed nightmares about the pastel trend but your suggestions show a more muted way of going about things. My fave is definitely the top one but I love that you've shown ways to rock pastels without resorting to a 'care bear marshmallow' state of affairs. Currently only brave enough to dabble in pastel nail polish but I'm sure I'll find my courage and work my way to full on outfits :) xxx

  40. I think look two is very "you" - I can really see you in that one. I can't wait until warmer weather appears... seems much more appropriate to wear pastels then! It's toooooo cold :( xxx

    ReplyDelete
  41. Best comment ever Maisy! Thank you (: There are so many ways to incorporate it in your look, I'm all for the pastel nail polishes at the moment too, I think it's still too cold to be whacking out the Spring Summer outfits to be honest! xx

  42. It's so pretty, I love that the front flap covered the entire bag, if that makes sense?! xx

  43. Thanks Lyzi, I nearly bought the top in Look Two until I remembered it was -2 degrees outside ;) Wearing about three layers today to avoid frostbite and the like today! xxx

  47. I adore look number 1, I don't think I've ever wanted a jumper so badly. Not sure my thunder thighs can deal with the pastel jeans but maybe a pastel oxford shirt under that jumper with grey jeans might just work for me.

  48. I think the pastel mint, blue and purple range would suit you really well Erin (: Mixed in with some muted greys and taupes ;) Ahh really? That's so annoying haha, I haven't let myself go into an Urban Outfitters for a whileee, I saw a gorgeous black velvet backpack in there that I fell in love with and I'm trying to avoid it :P xx

  52. My favurite are more intensive and bright colors but sometimes I also prefer pastel ones!

    ReplyDelete
  53. With that first look, even I'm tempted by pastels! And I look really really awful in pastels!
I love them and am loving the look of them for spring, but they tend not to work so well for me, which makes me infinitely sad, but is probably good for my bank balance.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm sure you don't, I love a good pastel colour! xx

    ReplyDelete
  55. Lovely! I tend to prefer to wear primary colours but this may have won me over. When the weather starts getting better I'm excited to start experimenting more with pastel colours. I don't dare wear any when there might be mud around haha.
