Currently Coveting: pretty things september '11

Wednesday, 28 September 2011

Seems a little weird to be featuring all of these autumnal goodies when we're experiencing a late Indian summer in England this week! As I type, I'm dressed in a simple sundress and am sat lounging about in the cool comfort of my living room, a Harry Potter film on in the background. You can always rely on the British weather to do the complete opposite of what is expected, that's for sure.

I spied this gorgeous hooded cardigan on the H&M website when browsing for pieces to style for my Ways to Wear feature this week. It looks a bit blah in the stock image, but if you click through to the item online, the model shows the cardigan in all it's slubby, cosy glory. I might brave West Quay on Saturday and search for this! Also seen the Karma knitted jumper at Monki that I really must have in my autumn wardrobe: I'm going to London on Friday to meet the Boohoo team and see their showroom, so will probably have a quick look in Selfridges on my way back for it. I am yet to splurge on Monki goodness, so if I do go and spy this blouse, I'm probably going to pick that up as well.

I haven't been particularly excited by New Look recently if I'm honest, so it was a pleasant surprise to see this skirt in my local branch's window, at a bargainous price of £9.99. The colour means I can get away from throwing something simple and black on, and still feel relatively dressed up enough for the day. Included the dalmatian Kurt Geigers just because they are gorgeous, £195 is not student-friendly unfortunately, I'm dithering between Miss Selfridge loafers and Topshop loafers to replace my battered Primark ones, and these heart ones are slowly winning in my eyes.

Packing is going well, now that I've buckled down and made a start. It's my third time of doing this exact same packing routine, so I can get it done within three hours without distractions. Anyway, wrapping up now, I'm going to swoon over Rupert Grint some more, sort out my laundry and mourn the fact that I finished watching Drunken to Love You this morning! xo

I'm featured in MyStreetChic's gallery at the moment too, click the pink heart to like my looks? Apparently I'll win something if enough of you do!

Bonus stills from the video we filmed!

(Shirt, Boohoo;

Wearing my Annie Greenabelle skirt makes me slightly nostalgic for the beginning of the summer. Only slightly though, in the sense that I'm beginning to feel the nerves for my final year at University, and would rather have another 4 months off.

I decided to wear the Iris skirt today with the Boohoo shirt I ordered a week or two ago. It has the loveliest open back detailing, but is really long at the front, and I'm starting to think I might take to it with my scissors and sewing machine just so it is a little wearable. Love love the double pockets at the front though! I feel like I haven't got enough wear out of this skirt by any standards, so I'm excited to experiment with it over the autumn and winter, with a variety of thick knit tights, of course! Trying to work out whether a jumper would "work" with this skirt, but it probably wouldn't... the skirt is a tad pouffy, so we shall see.

I move back to Southampton for my final year at Uni on Thursday. (You wouldn't believe it from how full my bedroom is right now!) I still get asked a lot of questions about "how I'm preparing for my first year" which is really strange, but I'm going into my final year now, and am ready to buckle down with my work and start hunting for that ever elusive post-graduate position. I suppose this is a bit of a heads up in case I happen to disappear for days at a time from here (which I doubt: I'm unhealthily addicted to blogging). I've glanced over the reading list I compiled for my dissertation a few weeks ago, and have a LOT of work to get on with, but I've always seen my blog/the blogging community as a welcome break and place to relax, as opposed to something that would detract from Uni. I guess everyone is different though!

Currently scribbling little notes down for a haircare related post, which has been requested countless times, so if you have any questions about my hair, ask away! I'm still a bit bemused that people want to know about my hair to be honest, I always see it as an inconvenience, but hey ho ;) Off to paint my nails in Zoya 'Marine' which came in my September Boudoir Prive box, I'll keep you updated on the ol' Twitter as ever. Oh, and who else watched the season premiere of Gossip Girl today?! I OMG'd throughout the entire episode to myself! xo

By the way, I filmed a little vlog and outfit video with my sister today, I'm trying to work out how to edit on my laptop (I usually edit videos on Macs) but I might share it with you if anyone's interested? You can see my outfit in HD and in much more detail ;)

Ways to Wear #23: jeans part two

Monday, 26 September 2011

Much as I profess to be anti-jeans, finding them uncomfortable and usually part of a thoughtless outfit (don't shoot me yet, that was just my opinion of them up until a few weeks ago!), I have decided to focus this week's Ways to Wear feature on jeans once more. I've been reaching for my old Miss Selfridge favourites a surprising amount recently, and think they can look lovely, elegant and effortlessly chic when styled with something more than a hoody. Also, following on from my last Ways to Wear edition that focused on back-to-Uni looks, I felt this fit in nicely with the whole theme of this time of year.

As with every installment, you don't necessarily need to go out and buy the jeans I feature, or any of the other items I feature. Take this as inspiration to rework pieces that you already have, or could potentially get your hands on via sisters'/best friends'/parents' wardrobes, clothes swaps, etc. I certainly don't buy clothes weekly, if that is any consolation! The pairs featured in my Looks below are from Topshop, Zara and River Island.

This Look is centralised on those skinny/straight leg jeans that once fit you perfectly, yet now seem to fit a little too loose and strangely (score!). Simply fold up the hems of each leg, for that slubby, slightly undone cuffed look, pop a simple camisole on and then an oversized top, letting it hang off one shoulder. I really think showing a bit of shoulder looks understatedly chic and not tacky at all, as long as the top is nice. I chose this navy top, which contrasts nicely with the faded pink jeans, with a scallop vest underneath. The scallop detail just offsets the outfit from looking as though you have a bra strap hanging out, which for the record, isn't a good look. If you were opting for blue jeans, I think a reverse with a pink top would look lovely, or even a warm mustard yellow. While the rain holds off in England, I'd pair with some little classic loafers, and a sideswept fishtail braid.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Lyzi and Emma with this outfit, and an animal print shirt. Again, a relatively conservative outfit, but a versatile one at that. You could either button the shirt up to the top, and wear a collar necklace under the collar with it, or pop a plain camisole underneath, leave the shirt unbuttoned and throw a silk scarf around your neck. These ankle "pixie" boots are still absolutely everywhere: they look gorgeous with pale grey jeans and some ankle socks peeping out above the boots. Finally, dress up your wool winter coats by tying a velvet or grosgrain black ribbon underneath the collar. Et voila, modern Audrey Hepburn chic!

Finally, I've styled a more dressed-up, dark look to finish this week's feature off. I think everyone has a pair of seriously worn-in jeans, right? So this look focuses on reworking those old jeans that you cast away in favour of shiny - maybe not literally shiny - new jeans. Wear with a plain, slightly oversized white vest top, I'd recommend the Heattech ones from Uniqlo, and layer a lace detail black vest over it. Nothing better than a simple layered look to dress an outfit up: I particularly love this silk one from The Kooples, although I'm sure the High Street will have similar, more affordable options. I've added some gold bracelets and a statement necklace to the look, for a failproof accessorise job, and then these gorgeous beyond gorgeous River Island wedge boots. Bag-wise, anything goes with this, a simple canvas tote, a black satchel, or my personal favourite in a drawstring leather bag. Keep your hair natural, tousled and slightly messy, and make-up classic and simple. To finish off, add a light wool snood and a buttery soft leather jacket.

I meant to post this on Saturday, but my laptop is on its' last legs at the moment, and it wouldn't switch on. Instead, I had a lovely evening spent torturing myself while watching awful X Factor contestants, and eating Maryland cookies and Thornton's champagne truffles with my little sister. Then, yesterday, my blog was flagged up for a malware notice, which has thankfully been sorted out now. It's been a ridiculous weekend for technology...!

I hope you enjoyed this week's Ways to Wear anyway, jeans are so easy to overlook for their sheer simplicity sometimes. I'm guest posting over at Victoria's blog soon too, so keep an eye out for that, and I'll be back tomorrow for an outfit post and update (with a bit of luck!). Let me know which Look this week is your favourite; mine is Look Three! xo

all too quiet

Friday, 23 September 2011

Today is one of those nondescript days, trying to pass the time with some home-baked savoury pastry goodies, a Harry Potter film because we all know I don't watch those enough, and playing with my new Boudoir Prive box of treats. Perfect. I actually have a driving lesson later this afternoon, at 2:45pm, which is the most awkward time to book for. No idea what goes through this mind of mine!

I took this random little webcam photo of my nails with all the intention of Twitpic-ing it, but completely forgot, so thought I'd just include it anyway. Check out that freshly washed, bouffant hair! I should really get on with my packing instead of taking webcam photos of myself... Also, has anyone read the Stop magazine that was shoved in our faces at London Fashion Week?! While there are some interesting reads in there, I can't help but think the magazine is geared towards some sort of anti-blogger movement.

I received my Boudoir Prive box this morning, having completely forgotten about it. I'm quite impressed by what's in there, and I personally like that there isn't a full-sized product in there to overshadow the others. Doused myself in the Agent Provocateur perfume and immediately realised that the musky, dark scent is definitely an evening scent. I'll be back tomorrow with a Ways to Wear edition, I think. Those are always my favourites to compile, edit and write! Oh, and before I forget, I received an exciting surprise email about my blog working in partnership with Grazia magazine - so exciting! Happy weekend! ♥

PS. Bonus outtake of an outfit "photoshoot" during the weekend, simply because who the heck walks like that?! ;)

the emerald underground

Wednesday, 21 September 2011

Having one of the laziest days in the history of ever, even by my standards. I did decide to go one up from yesterday though, and actually get dressed to mooch about the house, sort little bits out and pop out for some fresh air with my little sister. Savouring the free time and my little hometown for the last few days before madness ensues and I have to begin my third - and final! - year at Uni.

(Jumper, Boohoo;
Skirt, Topshop;
Belt, a strip of faux leather - haberdashery stores;
Tights, Wolford;
Brogues, Primark;
Necklace, gifted by the gorgeous Beth;
Tote bag, LFW.)

I say this so much, but this is my new favourite outfit: the cosy knit, little casual tie-up belt and a super-creased skater skirt makes for a simple, I-didn't-try-too-hard look. I'm such a sucker for just reworking old favourites instead of buying anew, and this pink skirt is a prime example of that. Found this skirt in my sister's overnight bag from the weekend, hence the creasing, but I like the imperfect look, I'm more concerned that she keeps borrowing my clothes, yet I don't notice because of the sheer amount of clothes in my wardrobe at the moment! I'm also toying with the idea of buying my Boohoo jumper in another colour - I honestly love it so much.

Monday marked my final shift at my parents' restaurant, which I couldn't be more pleased about. Much as I like to spend my spare time complaining about work, it isn't too bad because I typically just chat a lot, get given free cinema tickets by lovely customers (yep, this did happen to me last week!) and eat a never-ending supply of food from my Dad, who is the head chef. Rediscovered my Eyeko Pastel varnish which is gorgeous, the perfect iridescent pastel blue colour, I'm so sad that the nail varnishes are gone now, but the Eyeko rebrand and redesign is absolutely perfect, so chic and contemporary. I also really really want a set of nails from Charlene's genius nail art store, Dainty Nails, would definitely recommend having a look in her store!

Today is my brother's birthday, and it feels so weird to be celebrating it while he's up in Lincoln enjoying Freshers' Week. Happy birthday Jonny! ♥ I hope those lot up there are being kind to him and treating him to some £1 birthday cake from Asda! I think I'm spending my evening eating chocolate snowmen and doing some reading for Uni, as well as trying to bring back the battery level icon on my laptop - so inconvenient when my battery drains and shuts down when I have no way of knowing. Thanks Compaq and technology overall (my phone is also on its' last legs again)! What's everyone else up to tonight? ♥

PS. I updated my blog layout so the post archive is right at the bottom of the page now, and there are some new bits in the sidebar... and I also updated my blogroll!

IFB x Swarovski: Crystals & Crumpets

Tuesday, 20 September 2011

above image from Jackie at Made with Love

For me this season, one of the highlights of London Fashion Week was getting to see some fellow bloggers again, and meeting more for the first time. I managed to get off the waitlist and onto the ticketed list for the IFB & Swarovski event, which was pretty much a bloggers' conference, but not as formal as that phrase implies.

Lots of canapes and glasses of champagne were served as ever, set in the beautiful Swarovski Crystal Lounge just behind Oxford Street, and so many bloggers in one place. I met Winnie from Diamond Canopy beforehand so we both wouldn't have to make that awful entrance to an event on our own, and honestly, we have so much in common, it's crazy. Thanks Winnie for being such lovely company!

I had my Dalmatian nails style snapped many times, my outfit a few more times, and had a few photographs taken with the beautiful Vicki (want her glasses and hair so much) and Lily. The IFB talk was honestly one of the highlights of my day, it was great to hear about blogging from the "professional" perspective, and gain some more insight into aspects that are usually kept under wraps within the blogging community.

I was so excited to see Susie from Style Bubble and Shini from Park & Cube talk about their experience in blogging too, as they are two of my all-time favourites. One of the main things discussed was the idea that the opportunities bloggers get from blogging is a privilege and not a right, something I couldn't agree more about. You can read more about the event here, and follow the hashtags on Twitter for what was said on the day.

Spent the rest of the day, on-and-off, in-between shows and clashing schedules, with a plethora of bloggers that I've "followed" for ages, which was so lovely. We were all tired, confused (huge change in the reception of bloggers at LFW this season) and in a bit of a daze; I can't even remember what I wittered on about to various people, I'm sure I embarassed myself on more than one occasion!

Just going to go ahead and say you should be following the likes of Winnie, Lily, Vicki, Jazz, Jen, Gem, Kristabel, Carrie, Lucy, Hayley, Sarah and Amy, they are all bloody lovely to chat to and gossip with (we were at Jen and Vicki's hotel room til 11pm!) and are hilariously funny too. Amy's voice - get well soon! - and Kristabel's impressions are a stand-out for me too! Gem documented some of our get-together in a vlog as well, so be sure to have a watch of that, it makes for an amusing 10 minutes!

moment of weakness

Faux leather tie-up belt, as above;

Met up with Niran from Yin & Yang first thing on Friday for breakfast, which turned into just a coffee due to crazy schedules, and my inability to eat anything that isn't chocolate in the mornings. It was good to finally meet him after months of Tweets and emails, and even an interview behind the screen. We discussed a lot to do with the industry, making me feel like even more of an amateur, but mostly gossiped about the Gossip Girl cast. He shot some outfit photographs for me too, felt a little famous being papped in Carnaby Street!

My dress is something that my Mama picked up for me in Hong Kong last week. She came back on Wednesday morning at about 6am (my sleepy self was not impressed by that wake up call. On its' own, it is a little cape like, but cinched in with a strip of faux leather, it is super flattering and swishy. I love the tiny brass/rose gold imitation button detailing, and it's a shame we didn't manage to take any photos sans cardigan. I can imagine it looking super sweet with some dove grey, faux fur and sheer, lightly patterned tights.

I'm currently writing up a post about the IFB event, and about the blogger bits of my Friday, which is turning out to be very text-heavy, as I hardly managed to take any photos! I'm also going to pop a BB cream review and info post on Fashion-Tinted Glasses, which is my side blog for Uni. Planning to make full use of my afternoon before work to eat Cadbury's Mini Rolls, read One Day (obviously not all in one sitting, even I can't manage that!) and watch some old school Laguna Beach. Team Lauren-and-Stephen! ♥

a (fashion) week in photos

Sunday, 18 September 2011

Found Harry Potter wand styluses in a vending machine when I went food shopping at Wing Yip with my Dad, wasn't impressed when I ended up with Voldemort's wand - it wasn't even the Elder Wand! · Went to buy a horrendous amount of food with my sister, debated buying advent calenders just because they were there, but then we remembered, it's still September · My panic-ordered latte and the best chocolate cupcake for dessert at our LFW bloggers' dinner on Friday · London skyline a few weeks ago · Me, in my new favourite jumper that I want to wear all the time · A sneak preview of my day one Fashion Week outfit · Little snippet of some of the pieces on display at the J Brand SS12 exhibition, breathtakingly beautiful, simplistic and gorgeous fabrics · My pass which was next to useless! · The set up at IFB x Swarovski: Crystallized event · A snap from the Krystof Stroznya catwalk · My typical blog reading set-up = hundreds of Google Chrome tabs open!

Been the laziest photographer over the last few weeks, and I use the photographer term very, very lightly! I need to get back in the habit of taking my camera out with me, and remembering the battery and my memory card. Most of this week's photos are from London, as expected, I did spend more time talking to bloggers, designers and other people than toting my camera around and taking photos of everything, but got a few nonetheless. I just wanted to share some of them for those who want to see a little behind the scenes of my day. I'll be writing a post about the IFB event (which was so insightful, I'd recommend anyone interested in the mechanics and debates around blogging to go to the next event) and about blogger related shenanigans, because some of it will definitely make for laughs all around.

I posted my first LFW catwalk report/coverage yesterday, thank you to all those who read and commented! So overwhelming and surreal to have covered my first show this season. As all you lovely ladies let me know, Amber Atherton from Made in Chelsea was sat opposite me, and I didn't even notice, I was completely immersed in the show and trying to balance my belongings! In fact, to put my cultural skills to shame once more, I spent a good twenty minutes or so chatting away to Amber at her jewellery exhibition stand at Somerset House... without realising! Amber is super talented (more in the week!) and stunningly beautiful, I had a lovely conversation with her about our hometowns in Hong Kong, too.

Think I'm back in London for a few bits and bobs next week, but I'm also supposed to be moving back to Uni, so we shall see! Hope everyone is keeping well, I've been reading all of your blogs in-between shifts at work and just before bed, and I'll be back to my usual commenting like a crazy person regime once LFW and moving mayhem calms down. xo

Krystof Stroznya S/S12

Saturday, 17 September 2011

Went to the Krystof Strozyna S/S12 catwalk show on Friday after a panicked rush to get there following the IFB & Swarovski talk and event. Honestly, I will eventually learn to just hail a taxi from venue to venue next time, instead of assuming I'm some sort of Wonder Woman. Thank God, Fashion World works about half an hour behind the rest of the World, eh?!

The collection is my idea of perfect for a relaxed yet tailored season. Stroznya's third collection to be shown at London Fashion Week is full of striking cuts, geometrical lines and pops of colours (hate that term, but it is a perfect description in this scenario) amidst a sand/seashell nude. Particularly enjoyed buttery soft silk blazers, the soft colour block styling at the show, and the luxe fabrics and textures that deem the S/S12 collection perfect all day around, lounging on a cruise liner with similar coloured cocktails. Absolutely loved the hair styling too, wispy, coiffed with the softest curls at the ends, and swept away from the face for a very youthful feel.

Thank you to Lottie at Goodley PR for inviting me to the catwalk show, and to Lucy for helping me to feel not-like-an-outsider for the most part of the day!

And a NTS: must purchase a new lens for next season's photographs!

beauty highlights #1

Thursday, 15 September 2011

Starting a new featurette on my blog: a monthly (perhaps once every two months) post and general chatter about the beauty products that I'm currently using and enjoying. Even though I'm no beauty guru, I still receive a lot of questions about the products I use to maintain my hair, what blush colour I'm sporting, how I achieve XX look, and this felt like a nice way to summarise everything, while still being able to keep the focus of my blog on style and fashion.

Dalmatian Nail Art
The Westfield Stratford City launch in London this week saw a Dalmatian manicure at the Topshop store, designed and given by WAH Nails. Obviously I couldn't help but hop on the bandwagon, and decided to have a go at them myself. I just used Barry M's French Pink polish (so streaky, need to replace with a better pale pink ASAP) and spotted some generic black nail polish (this cost about £2 from Tesco and is perfectly glossy and opaque) on top with a little nail art tool from eBay. Apparently you can buy Dalmatian nail wraps from Topshop Unique for £7, which seems a little steep for a one-use product! It is available exclusively online here.

Lee Stafford vs. John Frieda
I am one of those people who can barely be bothered to condition their hair, let alone add extra treatments into the mix. Recently bought a conical wand, in an attempt to create loose waves to wear under knitted headbands for the winter, but I've strayed away from heat on hair for about 16 months now, so decided to pick some bits and bobs up to counteract the sudden heat. Really like Lee Stafford's [XX] treatment, I've used it about four times now, and it leaves my hair moisturised and smooth. At £7.99, the price is reasonable and worth paying as my hair is noticeable softer and growing again at last! The only thing I can complain about it the slightly dodgy scent and the tub packaging: I've wasted so much product from it slipping through my hands! I was sent the John Frieda conditioning spray about two weeks ago, and while I like the deep-conditioning idea, it always leaves my hair feeling sticky? I think I need to refine my, um, "technique" and use a little less product. I much prefer the spray packaging on this though - hello laziness!

Neal & Wolf Haircare
Overall, I am really pleased to have discovered Neal & Wolf through GlossyBox. One of the things people seem to forget is that GlossyBox aim to put you in reach of brands you wouldn't have been able to access or have heard of before, and I have found some amazing products in my boxes so far. The volumising lotion is something I picked out at the event two weeks ago, and I'm still having a little trouble with it. With the 2p sized amount I use throughout my hair, I think I'm using too much, as it can leave my hair looking volumised from the middle-to-end, yet my roots quite limp. Help a beauty-illiterate girl out, if you use this! I got the super shine spray in September's GlossyBox - some of you may have received different Neal & Wolf products - and absolutely love this. It beats my favourite Tresemme Shine Serum, and smells beyond good. Great for spritzing over your hair in the morning for a pick-me-up and to add that final, done-up finish, and something I will definitely repurchase!

HD Brow Kit
Finally, my new favourite thing: the HD brow set that came in September's GlossyBox. I actually received my box a week ago now, as did the other guests of their bloggers' evening, so that I could really get to grips with the products before sharing them with you if I wanted to. I must admit, this was the product that excited me the most, my ELF eyebrow kit had just run out, and I'd been dithering over the Benefit Browzings. The colours are super dark and pigmented, and I've had trouble with application, but after a few attempts, I'm pretty good with this palette now! I use the bottom left shade with a very light hand to fill in the ends of my brows, a tiny bit of the bottom right for the front(?!) of my brows, and then sweep all over with the nude shade to even out the colour. Perfect.
Disclaimer: I am lucky enough to have received some of these products at press events and as samples, this does not affect my opinion, and I'll always be honest about products I use. The Clinique moisturiser, Lee Stafford growth treatment, and nail varnishes were purchased with my own money, the Neal & Wolf volumiser was chosen by me at an event, while the HD Brow Set and Neal & Wolf shine spray came with my September GlossyBox. The John Frieda conditioner was sent to me for consideration.

Ways to Wear #22: jumpers & back to uni/school/etc.

Wednesday, 14 September 2011

I believe this is my first Ways to Wear edition in three weeks, and the first so far in September, how crazy is that? I've been a little slack with these, and have been more immersed in other posts I suppose, but they are probably my favourite little feature to write and work on for Daisybutter. I hope everyone is doing well too, my dashboard has been alarmingly quiet recently? Or is this another techno fail on Blogger's behalf?

This week I am concentrating on Ways to Wear outfits for Uni. I've been sneakily reading everyone's Back-to-Uni/School guides, despite the fact I'm now going into my final year, and this seemed like a nice way to join in with that trend but still providing something different. Now my first thought when it comes to dressing for lectures and seminars, or for popping in to the library, etc. is comfort and availability, with availability being a masked term for "what you can find in the mornings". With this in mind, each look is simplistic and versatile, yet remains very much on-trend for the A/W11 season.

Some well worn-in denim and knitwear seems bookish and prim, but I love this polka dot print jumper from Miss Selfridge. I saw it when I went shopping with Emma, and it is so soft and homely feeling, if you know what I mean? At £39, it is pretty steep, but the perfect investment if you want something versatile, warm and that hints at the Dalmatian print trend, caused by my ever-trusty Topshop (Unique AW11 collection). I know people think I'm crazy for continuing to feature and wear shorts for Winter, but paired with cable-knit tights (I live in these, worth every penny of that £9.99!), they are just as wearable as on your summer hols! Fold those jumper sleeves up twice, slip a gold bracelet on, and pop a knitted turban over your hair and you're good to go. Even if you forgoed a hairwash for that extra ten minutes in bed.

Look Two is pretty standard Daisybutter outfit material. I wore my Hollie jumper in Mocha from Missguided yesterday, and absolutely adore it. It is a bit scratchy on the inside, but nothing a three-quarter length bodysuit won't fix, and it is flecked with little sequins, which sound awful but are so pretty in reality. Wear the jumper with the front hem tucked into the skirt, and belted with that Dalmatian print again. The back of your jumper should be loose for an easy I-rushed-into-Uni-look-how-good-I-look feel, and push back your sleeves to show off a bracelet that shows off your personality. If you're just starting your first year, it's always good to pinpoint some jewellery that might become a conversation starter! I chose this feather one which looks feminine and earthy at the same time. Finally, shoes: I've paired this gorgeous red pair of Chelsea boots with Look Two, but if you're not brave enough for the red, a slouchy pair of brown boots (yep, brown and black is okay, I promise!) like these look amazing for a Whitney Port inspired outfit.

Unintentionally styled a solely H&M and Topshop outfit here, but truthfully speaking, if you are entering student life, you will become very attached to these High Street brands if you aren't already a devoted fan. H&M are always good for basics and are getting really great for more on-trend pieces at throwaway prices, while Topshop are pricey, but have a 10% all year round discount, which I often abuse, and a 20% off student event each AW. Lovely! I own about five of these fine-knit jumpers from H&M, they are perfect to throw on with leggings and a scarf for effortless chic, and it is a strangely slimming outfit! They come in so many colours, so click the link above for all other colourways. I opted to style this look with a faux fur stole, and with that comes gold jewellery for a luxe, semi-grunge look.

Finally, you can't really head off to Uni without a bag, right? I'm going to confess at this point that I am one of the most impractical people when it comes to bags: I carry my Mulberry Alexa, and then a shopper tote for my notebooks! Olivia at What Olivia Did wrote a post about her tote bag finds the other day, which covers all that I wanted to say, and features some lovely eclectic little bags and brands, so have a read here. I hope this was somewhat useful, as we embrace the jumper-clad ways of the English Autumn. Of course these aren't limited to students by any means, I don't mean to tar you all with the same brush, but these three Looks are just some simple outfits that have room to add touches of personality, which is perfect for starting a new Uni/college/school term with. Enjoy! xo

swing in your step

Tuesday, 13 September 2011

Currently laying in bed, reminiscing with some old school Jay Chou albums and waiting for my Awakening Potion to complete its' brew on Pottermore. Today has been a chilled day, full of laughs and singalongs with my Dad, and a generic reclining in comfy corners kind of afternoon. I'm taking it as a calm-before-the-storm kind of moment, as my London Fashion Week plans are shaping up to be a crazy flurry already!

(Jumper, c/o Boohoo;
Black top - underneath, Uniqlo;
Shorts, George at Asda;
Brogues, Primark;
Ampersand necklace, c/o Maria Allen Jewellery;
Fleur de Lis necklace, c/o Sunken Rose.)

Yesterday I awoke to a sizeable parcel at my bedroom door, kindly collected and re-delivered to me by my little sister. About a month ago, I was invited to the Boohoo A/W press day, but sadly couldn't make it, and the super kind people over at Boohoo offered me some store credit to sample their collection first-hand for myself. Really pleased with both of the pieces I chose: the Hollie fisherman knit jumper is probably going to be my new overworn piece, and I also chose a roll-up sleeve, open back shirt, which needs a bit of a steam, so I shall share that with you when I get round to that...! Decided to wear my favourite little wooden Ampersand necklace, after seeing Lily wear hers yesterday! It is, hands down, one of my top five favourite necklaces, if not the top. I really have a thing for longer chain pieces.

Been trawling through the coverage of NYFW on my breaks from work, the stand-out collections for me this season come from Jill Stuart, Band of Outsiders, Marc Jacobs (of course) and The Row. Really into the simplicity that always comes with S/S collections, the almost-neon pops of colour, and especially the ethereal fits of The Row collection. Oh how I'd love to be a New Yorker...

Anyway, I'm off to tidy the house for my Mama's imminent return from Hong Kong, attempt my own Topshop x WAH Nails Dalmatian nail art, and continue my search for the perfect berry-coloured straight-leg or skinny jean - anyone care to enable me? xo

longchamp 'keep on riding'

Monday, 12 September 2011

Firstly, 中秋節快樂 to my readers, or happy Mid-Autumn Festival! Going to be eating lots of mooncake and admiring the (hopefully) super bright moon tonight. Sharing a beautiful new ad campaign from Longchamp with you today. I absolutely love this campaign, for me, it beats those Kate Moss ones from a few years back, and embodies Longchamp's brand down to a T. The campaign itself is visual and very interactive, in that you get to (sort of) ride a chintzy little motorcycle through autumnal Paris, in search of the new Balzane bag. Which, I can confirm, is now safely on my bags-I-desperately-want-and-would-give-up-rent-for list. Another thing I like about the ad campaign is that is features three fashion bloggers from around the world, I find it so fascinating how the social media world and fashion industry work together so well.

The imagery in this video is honestly breathtaking, it takes you to all of the fashion hotspots, and made me really miss the last time I was in Paris, during Paris Fashion Week A/W 2010 with Uni. Would highly recommend you all taking 5 minutes to watch the video, follow the clues, and be swept away with the romance of Europe's most romantic and fashionable city.

PS. The music is so good, makes me happy!
PPS. I'm going to be completely open and brazen and let you all know that this post is sponsored. All opinions are of my own though, if you can't already tell from my witterings, I love me a good luxury leather.

gold ochre

Sunday, 11 September 2011

Today I broke many of my personal rules: I a) got dressed on a Sunday, b) wore two animal prints (both leopard, before you're all horrified by my clothing antics, and c) wore jeans. I think I'm turning over a new leaf, after being in jeans for about 90% of the week, I've fallen back in love with some very well worn-in denim and supple textures. By the way, excuse my hair and facial expressions in this post, it was so bright yet windy outside - not ideal for outfit photos.

(Fisherman knit jumper, Topshop;
Animal print top, Topshop;
Straight-leg jeans, Miss Selfridge - really really old stock;
"Caggie" boots, ASOS;
Fleur de Lis necklace, c/o Sunken Rose;
Bracelet, c/o Happytoasts;
Clutch, H&M c/o The Look Show.)

I had planned to spend the day in my pyjamas, and then sneakily reshoot my outfit from last week's GlossyBox event to share with you today, but decided to pop out with my sister for a little bit instead. We went for a little gossip, to buy food and then as ever, she snapped my outfit photos for me. There's something quite satisfying about getting up late and deciding to actually get dressed on a Sunday, you know, the lazy me is finally turning over a new leaf!

I think this outfit is quite a step up from my usual attire. I've spent a week just reverting to basics, and really like this look. "Borrowed" the jumper from my Mamabear who is currently in Hong Kong, and I like the oversize fit. (Mama and I are different sizes, obvz.) The little bit of leopard print peeking out underneath dresses everything up, and ties the look together quite well: my new go-to outfit for Uni lectures next month. This clutch bag came with my Look Show goody bag all the back in February. I completely forgot about it, but then spied it lurking with my shoe box tower in my wardrobe and needed to wear it immediately. Yep, a leopard-print clutch bag and heeled boots to the supermarket. Appropriate as ever.

Got a few reviews and other bits and bobs pencilled in to post this coming week, which I think you'll enjoy. I've discovered so many lovely products to share with you: honestly, my hair has never felt so smooth and silky in my life. My September GlossyBox arrived early on Friday too, as I went to the event last week. I've had a peek in mine, and played around with everything over the weekend, and I'm so excited to hear what everyone else thinks of theirs next week. Also, is anyone going to be at London Fashion Week? Let me know, I'd love to meet more peeps. xo

the truth about september

(last image taken from topographe via tumblr)

Hello again girls and guys. Sorry for being a little mysterious and abrupt in my last post, I wanted to share the few photos I took last week, but received a little bad news at the weekend. I had no idea when I'd feel up to writing on here again, so a short and sweet message felt like the best thing to do! Just wanted to say a thank you to the beautiful girls who reached out and emailed/messaged me, I genuinely do feel like my readers are my friends, especially those who text me at silly o'clock with the best out-of-the-blue messages and hilarious autocorrects. It meant so much to know people were thinking of little ol' me.

I wore the above outfit today. Just a cosy, really casual outfit to pop for lunch with my Dad. I haven't been venturing outdoors too much, was planning to pop over to Vogue's Fashion Night Out but I don't feel up to it. I've been cosied up in my dressing gown (easy to whip off and pretend I've been proactive to people at the door), spending some quality time with my sister, immersing myself in Wikipedia knowledge, and perfecting my hair curling techniques. If you can call them that. I'm also trying to frantically plan ahead for London Fashion Week, because my press pass finally got approved last week and I've had some catwalk invites. Supposed to be moving back to Southampton that week, but you know, I've always got my priorities in order(!)

Had the biggest nightmare with parcels being delivered to the wrong place and all sorts on Wednesday, Amazon, I'm not impressed. Despite being told they'd "happily replace my lost goods", I then received a pretty rude email saying it wasn't their problem! Luckily, my best friend Ebony came to my rescue and rushed to the handling office in Southampton, and rescued my packages which were an inch from death being thrown out. Then this morning, I received the most gorgeous little package from Beth. It was so, so generous and thoughtful of her, as I hadn't asked for anything at all, but she gifted me the Fleur de Lis necklace, that I'm wearing today. There is a September discount code in my sidebar if you want to make use of that.

I'll hopefully be back to posting as usual now, just needed a few days away from talking about frivolous matters such as "my new dress" and what I've been doing, to focus on more important things. x
