Much as I profess to be anti-jeans, finding them uncomfortable and usually part of a thoughtless outfit (don't shoot me yet, that was just my opinion of them up until a few weeks ago!), I have decided to focus this week's Ways to Wear feature on jeans once more. I've been reaching for my old Miss Selfridge favourites a surprising amount recently, and think they can look lovely, elegant and effortlessly chic when styled with something more than a hoody. Also, following on from
my last Ways to Wear edition that focused on back-to-Uni looks, I felt this fit in nicely with the whole theme of this time of year.
As with every installment, you don't necessarily need to go out and buy the jeans I feature, or any of the other items I feature. Take this as inspiration to rework pieces that you already have, or could potentially get your hands on via sisters'/best friends'/parents' wardrobes, clothes swaps, etc. I certainly don't buy clothes weekly, if that is any consolation! The pairs featured in my Looks below are from Topshop, Zara and River Island.

This Look is centralised on those skinny/straight leg jeans that once fit you perfectly, yet now seem to fit a little too loose and strangely (score!). Simply fold up the hems of each leg, for that slubby, slightly undone cuffed look, pop a simple camisole on and then an oversized top, letting it hang off one shoulder. I really think showing a bit of shoulder looks understatedly chic and not tacky at all, as long as the top is nice. I chose this navy top, which contrasts nicely with the faded pink jeans, with a scallop vest underneath. The scallop detail just offsets the outfit from looking as though you have a bra strap hanging out, which for the record, isn't a good look. If you were opting for blue jeans, I think a reverse with a pink top would look lovely, or even a warm mustard yellow. While the rain holds off in England, I'd pair with some little classic loafers, and a sideswept fishtail braid.
Taking inspiration from the likes of
Lyzi and
Emma with this outfit, and an animal print shirt. Again, a relatively conservative outfit, but a versatile one at that. You could either button the shirt up to the top, and wear a collar necklace under the collar with it, or pop a plain camisole underneath, leave the shirt unbuttoned and throw a silk scarf around your neck. These ankle "pixie" boots are
still absolutely everywhere: they look gorgeous with pale grey jeans and some ankle socks peeping out above the boots. Finally, dress up your wool winter coats by tying a velvet or grosgrain black ribbon underneath the collar. Et voila, modern Audrey Hepburn chic!

Finally, I've styled a more dressed-up, dark look to finish this week's feature off. I think everyone has a pair of seriously worn-in jeans, right? So this look focuses on reworking those old jeans that you cast away in favour of shiny - maybe not literally shiny - new jeans. Wear with a plain, slightly oversized white vest top, I'd recommend the Heattech ones from Uniqlo, and layer a lace detail black vest over it. Nothing better than a simple layered look to dress an outfit up: I particularly love this silk one from The Kooples, although I'm sure the High Street will have similar, more affordable options. I've added some gold bracelets and a statement necklace to the look, for a failproof accessorise job, and then these gorgeous beyond gorgeous River Island wedge boots. Bag-wise, anything goes with this, a simple canvas tote, a black satchel, or my personal favourite in a drawstring leather bag. Keep your hair natural, tousled and slightly messy, and make-up classic and simple. To finish off, add a light wool snood and a
buttery soft leather jacket.
I meant to post this on Saturday, but my laptop is on its' last legs at the moment, and it wouldn't switch on. Instead, I had a lovely evening spent torturing myself while watching awful X Factor contestants, and eating Maryland cookies and Thornton's champagne truffles with my little sister. Then, yesterday, my blog was flagged up for a malware notice, which has thankfully been sorted out now. It's been a ridiculous weekend for technology...!
I hope you enjoyed this week's Ways to Wear anyway, jeans are so easy to overlook for their sheer simplicity sometimes. I'm guest posting over at Victoria's blog soon too, so keep an eye out for that, and I'll be back tomorrow for an outfit post and update (with a bit of luck!). Let me know which Look this week is your favourite; mine is Look Three!
